Hermitage of Saint Martin

Hermitage of Saint Martin

It was built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
Its Gothic style and its setting amidst a beech forest make it one of the most elegant chapels in the area. It has a rectangular floor plan and a gabled roof. The exterior features some of the finest decorative elements typical of the stonemasons of the period in which it was built. Inside, it housed images of Saint Martin and Saint Isidore. In the past, it was customary to make the pilgrimage on Saint Martin’s Day, 15 May, and hold a popular festival, and on Saint Catherine’s Day, when a mass was celebrated. On the Tuesday before the Feast of the Ascension, a procession would set out from the parish church of Otxandio.
