As a result of the bombing of Andikona and the proximity of the front line, many residents of Otxandio left the town in search of a safer place. For those who remained, 6–7 shelters were set up in various parts of the town. The militiamen posted lookouts in the church bell tower and, upon spotting enemy aircraft, would ring the bells, prompting the population to rush to the shelters. Thanks to this measure, although a single aircraft (a Bruget XIX) bombed the streets of Otxandio from end to end on 26 August, no casualties were reported. The population learnt to protect themselves from the war.
